How to reverse aging – will the enzyme telomerase be used in our lifetime to reverse the aging process?
Telomerase is a RiboNucleo protein that is an enzyme which adds DNA sequence repeats and prevents constant loss of important DNA from chromosome ends.
Aging is the buildup of cellular error acccording to Michio Kaku. Starve cells and they will live longer, perhaps 30% longer. This is a known way to extend the life of organisms.
The enzyme telomerase allows for replacement of short bits of DNA known as telomeres, which are otherwise shortened when a cell divides via mitosis.
With the presence of telomerase, each dividing cell can replace the lost bit of DNA, and any single cell can then divide unbounded.
Telomerase therapies may be used to combat cancer and extend lifespan significantly.
Laboratory experiments on mice with resveratrol have reported beneficial cardiovascular effects and lowering of blood sugar.
Resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes and in other fruits. Red wine contains very little resveratrol. Better to eat or juice the red grape.
With resveratrol and other enzymes, we are finding tantalizing pieces of the Fountain of Youth.
Will the study of enzymes like resveratrol and telomerase one day lead research scientists to a significant breakthrough and reversal of the aging process?
