defer non-essential travel

US Government personnel and their families are prohibited from personal travel to all areas described as “defer non-essential travel.”

The Department of State has issued this Travel Warning to inform US citizens about the security situation in Mexico.

When travel for official purposes is essential it is conducted with extensive security precautions and to exercise caution.

Prior to traveling to Oaxaca City, US citizens should monitor the US Embassy in Mexico City’s web site, http://mexico.usembassy.gov/eng/citizen_services.html, as well as http://travel.state.gov for the most up to date Safety and Security information.

A major 7.7 magnitude earthquake has shaken Mexico, 120 miles east of Acapulco near Oaxaca, swaying buildings as far away as Mexico City.

U.S. government employees and their families are not permitted to drive for personal reasons from the U.S.-Mexico border to or from the interior of Mexico or Central America.

The rising number of kidnappings and disappearances throughout Mexico is of particular concern.

We strongly advise you to lower your profile and avoid displaying any evidence of wealth that might draw attention.

Oaxaca City: There have been ongoing demonstrations and protests in Oaxaca City due to civil unrest since June 2006. Several groups have engaged in violent demonstrations in Oaxaca City, which resulted in the death of an American citizen in October 2006.

American citizens should avoid participating in demonstrations and other activities that might be deemed political by the Mexican authorities.

The Mexican Constitution prohibits political activities by foreigners, and such actions may result in detention and/or deportation.

Oaxaca (coastal): There have been a number of drownings along the beaches of the southern coast of Oaxaca. Swimmers are advised that currents can quickly become treacherous, even for accomplished swimmers.

Millions of Americans travel to Mexico every year for tourism and about 150,000 cross south of the border every single day.

The US State Department is currently advising Americans to cancel non-essential travel to Mexico.
